Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman is one of the most celebrated urban fantasy writers. He has written in many diverse formats, including comic books, including Sandman, and graphic novels. My favorite Gaiman novel so far (I only discovered him about six months ago) is Neverwhere a tale that takes place in a bizarre Otherworld existing within the London Underground. Gaiman has the ability to make the most strange and surreal creatures come to life. This is especially challenging in the urban fantasy genre, where the fantastic must co-exist with the everyday. Neverwhere is one of those novels that I think deserves at least one sequel. A whole series of books could easiy be made from it. In American Gods it is hypothesized that the ancient gods of many pantheons are roaming around contemporary America. They are threatened by the new gods of technology. A recently released convict gets caught up in this battle between gods. Anansi Boys is one of Gaiman's books I haven't yet read, but it is quite popular and has won an award. Stardust is both a novel and a recent movie. This one does not really fit the urban fantasy mode; it's more of a modern fairy tale. As in traditional tales, the hero has a quest -in this case, to capture a fallen star who turns out to be a young woman. As he attempts to bring the star back to his village -mainly against her wishes- he must overcome many obstacles, including a powerful witch who wants the star for her own purposes. Although Stardust mainly takes place in the magical faerie realm, it does create the same division between the magical and ordinary that urban fantasies usually have. This, of course, was characteristic of many ancient tales of faerie, long before modern fantasies were written. I'm not sure if this is the authorized site for him or just put up by a dedicated fan, but it has comprehensive information about Neil Gaiman
