Charles de Lint
Charles de Lint is one of the most popular authors in the genre of book known as urban fantasy. His books are always fascinating explorations of the magical worlds that lie hidden beneath the everyday reality of modern life. Memory and Dream is one of de Lint's most popular and enduring works. It explores not only the possibility of hidden worlds and creatures, but the way artists can access these realities. Isabelle is an artist who discovers that the fantastic creatures she depicts in her paintings are coming to life. The results of this are both exciting and frightening. Widdershins tells the story of a contemporary war between Otherwordly beings. It brings up a political analogy between colonialism and the faerie worlds, as the conflict is between Native American spirits and the faeries who arrived from the Celtic lands. It also brings back some of de Lint's earlier characters, such as folk musician Jilly Coppercorn, who is in the middle of this conflict. Like his other novels, Widdershins creates a world where the modern human world and magical realms exist side by side. Artists and musicians figure strongly in all of de Lint's books. It is hardly surprising to consider that magic could best be seen and appreciated by creative people, but these novels seem to suggest something even beyond this -perhaps that the creations of our imaginations, which are labelled as "imaginary" are just as real as the physical objects that our senses can perceive.
